Wyre Forest invited to ‘Shape Up’ for free this January

Following the festive season, it is the time of year when we challenge ourselves, set goals and start a fresh. This January, Places Leisure are inviting individuals in the Wyre Forest to make positive lifestyle changes as the 'Shape Up' programme returns.

Delivered by the Living Well Service, Wyre Forest Leisure Centre and supported by the Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire and Wyre Forest District Council, the free programme aims to support residents to get active and become healthier.

Running for twelve weeks, 'Shape Up' will encourage participants to make healthy lifestyle choices related to food, activity and fitness. Advice will be offered about what and how they eat, as well as looking at ways in which they can better balance their diet. Those taking part in the programme will motivated to choose from and participate in a range of activities taking place at Wyre Forest Leisure Centre. Previous activities have included badminton, aqua, boxing, table tennis, swimming and many more.

Over the past 2 years, the programme has been a roaring success; two thirds of participants have lost weight and almost three quarters are more active.

Emma Gardner, Project Manager for Adult Participation and the Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire said, "The Sports Partnership is delighted to work in partnership with the Living Well Service and Places for People to continue to support the Shape Up programme in the Wyre Forest."

"We believe that together we can support and motivate people in the area to look at improving their health and wellbeing as well as encouraging them to maintain the changes they will have made as part of the programme."

"In the two years that the project has been running, we have seen fantastic results. Individuals have been able to meet like-minded people, gaining confidence to make positive changes to their lifestyle. As a result nearly all course participants have planned to continue to exercise, making physical activity a lifelong habit and reducing their risk of major health conditions such as diabetes."

For many people 'Shape Up' has had a greater impact than simply weight loss, "The group has been really helpful. The staff are fantastic with all their help and advice. It has brought members out of their shells and takes away the embarrassment. We have met new friends in the group where everyone is really great. Love coming and don't want it to end!"

Another participant said, "This has definitely encouraged us to exercise and has given us different options. It has also given us an insight as to what we should eat, especially portion sizes. The group was very friendly and the instructors were non-judgemental of what people can or cannot do."

The next Shape Up course is due to begin on 14th January 2019. If you are interested in making a change in your lifestyle, please contact Living Well on 01905 675850 or email livingwellhub@independencetrust.co.uk for more information or to book your place.
