This Girl Can in Schools
Initially beginning as a District-based pilot campaign in 2015, 'This Girl Can' in Herefordshire and Worcestershire has gone from strength-to-strength. In the fourth year of the campaign, we worked with 8 Lead Schools in Worcestershire and 3 Lead Schools in Herefordshire to deliver an energetic, vibrant and engaging campaign.
Working with schools, leisure providers and sporting organisations across the two counties, the campaign aimed to address low level mental health and change the perception of sport and physical activity among female students.
- Gain an understanding of females' motivations and barriers for physical activity participation
- Change the perception of sport and physical activity among females and schools
- Increase awareness of the national 'This Girl Can' campaign messaging
- Facilitate the discovery and improve the accessibility of physical activity opportunities across Worcestershire
- Promote positive mental health through association with physical activity
- Enable and promote positive experiences of sport and physical activity
There are a number of reasons that prevent girls from participating in sport and physical activity. Insight developed through our 2019 This Girl Can campaign suggests that among active, fairly active and inactive audiences, fear of judgement remains the greatest barrier to sport and physical activity, aligning with national insight.
Before participating in the campaign, girls rated their feelings towards sport and physical activity. As a result of the campaign, we saw an increase in positivity towards physical activity and sport across all Districts in Worcestershire and in Herefordshire. Following the campaign, girls reported a large increase in confidence to participate and said they wanted to take part in sport and physical activity more often.
Over 50% of females surveyed reported an increased awareness of local physical activity opportunities and almost 70% said they were more aware of the contribution that sport and physical activity can make towards positive mental health.
2020 School Campaign
Following the success of 'This Girl Can' in Herefordshire and Worcestershire so far, this year we are planning to take our This Girl Can campaign one step further, with the expansion to a year-long programme, aimed at inspiring women and girls of all ages and backgrounds, both in school and within the community.
As part of the 12-month campaign, we have highlighted 9th-20th March 2020 as the Worcs/Here Girls Can School focus. This year we are offering schools the opportunity to apply for funding of up to £250 from Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire to deliver activities and programmes targeting the most inactive and disengaged girls between the ages of 13 and 16. In terms of inactive, this is defined as anyone who averages under 30 minutes of physical activity per week (not including curriculum PE). The funding is available to enable schools to provide activities over the 2 week period as an alternative to the current PE curriculum offer.
If your school would like to apply for funding, please complete the application form by the closing date of Friday 24th January 2020 at 5pm.
